Rena D'Souza, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D.

Dr. Souza joined Baylor College of Dentistry as chair of biomedical sciences and U24 Senior Magnet Investigator. She is an accomplished academician, administrator and scientist with a record of sustained and innovative scholarship. Prior to joining Baylor College of Dentistry, Dr. D’Souza was director or research and professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center Dental Branch at Houston. She also served as director and principal investigator of the NIDCR/NIH Comprehensive Research Training Program (T32). A recipient of the IADR’s Distinguished Scientist Award and the National Student Research Group Mentor Award, Dr. D’Souza has contributed significantly to the molecular understanding of tooth development, craniofacial development, matrix biology and regenerative biology. She is responsible for the discovery of the PAX9 gene involved in oligodontia.

Dr. D’Souza received her bachelor of dental surgery degree from the University of Bombay in India and her doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. She earned her master’s and doctorate degrees in biomedical sciences from UTHSC-Houston as well. She and her husband, Richard, have two children.
