Some WCF patients go on remarkable journeys in the course of their treatment and life experiences. Born in China, Jairus was adopted one year ago into a large, loving American family living in Florida. The bilateral cleft lip and palate with which Jairus was born was particularly severe, and his adoptive mother’s quest for a skilled craniofacial surgeon led her to a South African doctor now practicing in Colorado – by way of Pennsylvania and Georgia. The WCF facilitated trips for treatment, offering financial assistance with travel expenses and hotel costs. Jairus’s large, deep cleft palate has affected his speech development, and Jairus will require further corrective palate surgery and speech therapy to compensate.
